My annual organ donation post

Those of you who have been reading my LJ for awhile are aware that I make this post every year.

It's October 9th. My best friend, Sherry Payne, died 19 years ago today (aged 14) because she needed a heart and lung transplant. She was such a warm, vibrant, positive force in my life. To see such a bright light snuffed out at FOURTEEN is heartbreaking. She barely had a chance to live.

This is a cause very close to my heart. As soon as I got my driver's license, I didn't hesitate for one second to become an organ donor.

I urge you, if you aren't already, to become an organ donor. Many people may have questions about the cost or burden to their families if they sign up...any questions can be answered here:

http://www.organdonor.gov/

Nineteen years later, the need still far outweighs the number of donations.

If you're already an organ donor, I would love for you to leave a comment.

And also make sure everyone knows your wishes because there are family members who try to override the organ donor thing.

Good point. My family is well aware of my wishes. I believe we are all organ donors.

I know it is against some religions, though. Otherwise, I can't imagine why anyone would try to prevent it.

I'm an organ donor! I didn't hesitate for a second when I made that decision. :)

I've been an organ donor for over 10 years now.
I carry a little card (in german) in my wallet and have them include the information on any kind of ID if possible.

But I did exclude my eyes.... now that gives me the shivers for some reason...

I've always been one, ever since I first heard of them.

I have never been not an organ donor. My parents and I had discussions about it and they had their reseversations (and probably still do) but as soon as I turned 18 I got a donors card (it's not connected to your DL in Germany). And of course I also had them put me as a donor on my US DL and on my military ID!

I'm a donor!

I am an organ donor and I would donate anything in a heartbeat (a kidney, blood) if it would save someone elses life but being non-US citizen makes it hard to donate. I wish I would be able to donate blood or plasma

I've been signed up now for a few years.

I'm a donor! I have been since I was 16 and started driving. As a matter of fact, I remember having a discussion with my mom about it before I could even drive. I told her my organs were worthless to me when I'm done here and to give them away. I love this post.
