Ohio was hit very hard with the remnants of Hurricane Ike yesterday. The entire city of Columbus (my parents included) is without power...they don't expect to have it up for another week. My parents' phone is dead. Luckily, my mom has a cellphone. They had a lot of debris. They had tropical storm force winds - twice as high as what was predicted. My grandma had a lot of damage at her house too, but fortunately her power stayed on.

So...not as bad as what Texas got, and aside from all the food spoiling in the fridge and freezer, my parents are good. They can live without the electricity. They have running water. And they recently restocked their pantry, but as they can get to the store without any problems anyway, that doesn't matter much. They can cook, since they have a gas range. And the giant limb that fell on the house didn't do as much damage as it very easily could have.

Things will ease up a bit at work this week, after the difficult time I had last week. Friday, we're having a farewell get-together after work for one of my co-workers, who is relocating to the corporate office. I'll miss her. She's a lot of fun. I'll go for maybe an hour or so. I think it's just partaking of Happy Hour at a bar down the street from work.

Next Monday, we'll have a breakfast potluck for the guy who is transferring in from Salt Lake City. He's replacing the girl who is leaving. He's already trained and everything...he just needs to learn how things work in the Seattle office, but otherwise, he's ready to go.

Anyway, I'm bringing scones in, methinks. Anyone got a decent scone recipe? I got a few scone recipes in one of my baking cookbooks, but I'm open to suggestions. I'm tempted just to get a mix.

I bought the Across the Universe soundtrack yesterday, and it's now in heavy rotation in my car. I've always been a Beatles fan, but these songs touch me on an entirely different level.

Re: Ohio

Yeah, my mom and I got a call from my uncle in Cincinnati and he and my grandfather don't have power, my two other uncles and their families don't have power. One aunt in Columbus does have power and we can't reach my other aunt yet because nobody has her cell number (well, I did, but my cell died, so I can't get the number).

Power is back in Columbus now...hoping it's the same situation everywhere else.

Just got off the phone with my parents...their phone line is up again too, although we were communicating via my mom's cellphone before.
