Apr. 19th, 2009 07:27 pmI went out this morning and completely gutted the flower bed in the backyard, except for the irises and the rose bush. The rest of it was weeds and stuff that keeps coming back from year to year that I don't want to grow (rhubarb and varieties of onions). I want only flowers. I do not want to be responsible for produce.
So now I have all this space to work with, and I'm trying to plan what to plant. The soil is loam, which is ideal. I'm in zone 8 in regards to what will grow. I was thinking impatiens might work well. And those come in several varieties, so I could have several plants together. I want stuff that's relatively low maintenance. The front flower beds are still in really good shape and I've had to do very little to them.
My mom told me last year that I should dig up and separate the irises because they are too crowded together. That will probably be a fall project, since the irises have already started to grow.
All this gardening stuff is pretty new to me. I had a couple of small garden patches when I was a kid, because I was working on Girl Scout badges or whatever. But I always had help from my parents. I'm hardly a green thumb.

Today has been a gorgeous day - low '70s. We've been outside most of the day. I took Reece to Reber Ranch for some play time today, but that didn't go all that well. She seemed really bored because most of the dogs were smaller than her and not really interested, and the larger dogs that tried to be friendly with her were no match to her when it came to running. I think we were there maybe half an hour, and then she walked to the gate and looked at me like she wanted to leave. So we went into the store to pick up some items (doggie bath wipes and a bully stick) and we walked by the playground again on the way to the car. She started crying, indicating to me that she wanted to go back in. So we went back into the playground. She found a couple of new dogs to run around with. And one of them got really aggressive with her and peed on her face - luckily, just a few drops.
I probably should have given her a bath after that, but I wiped her down very well with 2 of the bath wipes. Besides, when I bathe her, I never shampoo her face anyway. Too much chance of getting shampoo in her eyes. But that was pretty much our cue to leave.
Been doing housework otherwise today, and touching base with far-flung friends. I made lemon pepper chicken with feta cheese for dinner tonight, although I made the mistake of serving it with a Knorr rice mix. I usually get Rice a Roni, and I'll stick with Rice a Roni. The Knorr stuff was truly awful. Reconstituted veggies...ick. I had a coupon for that brand, which is why I tried it, but I won't make that mistake again. I dumped the rest of it in the garbage disposal.
Anyway, I'm off here soon to shower and then do some reading before bed. It's been a productive day overall, and I even got in a little catnap time before dinner. Dozing off and on for about half an hour or so.
