I just got an email a short while ago informing me that my candle-making mecca - Waxen Art - is going out of business.

I'm a bit shocked, I must admit. Mere months ago, they were talking of expansion. They introduced the fused glass making sessions, which were very popular. They were even hiring a marketing person. They actually seemed to be taking off, and I could see why. Their candle-making and fused glass sessions were reasonably priced, and people could go there for inexpensive gifts that they can make by hand.

Kathy and I became disenchanted with Waxen Art after our last visit, when we were doing the fused glass jewelry. We said we would never go there again (and in fact, Kathy used to make her own candles, so she doesn't need to go to a studio to do it), but I still never expected this to happen. They were always crowded during their special sessions. In fact, that was one of the reasons why we were so annoyed last time. The place was packed and there wasn't enough room to work. And we didn't like the way the fused glass class was conducted.

But it seems most people did not share our opinion. And that's why I find this so odd. It's kind of sad. I still have good memories of that place.

I just hope some of my favorite independently-owned places stay in business: Chair & Trellis, Marie Haggin, Castle Bridge Winery, Bella. They are what make living in Kent, well, liveable. Otherwise, there is nothing special about this place whatsoever.
