May. 30th, 2009 11:34 amSo...we took Reece to the vet this morning for what we thought would be a routine visit. She needed to get updates on her vaccinations, plus Bordetella, because Petsmart requires that every 6 months even though the vaccine is good for a year.
We mentioned the sore on Reece's ear. Two vets have looked at it already and didn't think it was anything to worry about, but it hasn't healed. It's just a constant cycle of scabbing, breaking and bleeding. Despite my best efforts, it just won't go away.
This vet didn't just look at her sore. She thought to actually examine Reece's ear canal. And I'm glad she did, because she noticed a foxtail wound around Reece's eardrum, and partially embedded inside it.

Who knows how long it's been there? She asked us if Reece shakes her head a lot (which is a big part of why her wound won't heal, because she breaks it open every time she shakes), and she does...all the time. And it's because of this nasty thing in her ear.
So she's there now. She will be sedated and they'll extract this thing, put her on antibiotics for a week, and hopefully the wound will heal if she stops shaking her head.
Nice to have that dealt with, and I shudder to think what would've happened if this continued to go undiscovered. But really not something we needed...ESPECIALLY today. That was an extra expense we really didn't need right now.
