Steps up on my soapbox
Oct. 9th, 2010 12:03 pm(You guys who have been reading my LJ awhile have seen this before. Bear with me. You know I do this every year.)
I am thinking of my friend Sherry today, who died 21 years ago on this date. She was 14. She died because she didn't get the heart and lung transplant that she so desperately needed, and she spent the last couple years of her life too sick to have lunch with her classmates or go to school dances. She couldn't even go up and down stairs, and I vividly remember her father bringing her to school everyday and carrying her up the stairs to her classes, and then carrying her back down again at the end of the day. My friends and I brought her lunch tray up to her and had lunch with her in the empty classrooms. In her final months, she was too sick to even go to school.
This didn't have to happen. But it did because there was a shortage of organ donors, and she was on a long waiting list. She didn't have time to wait. I'm an organ donor. Are you?
