Oct. 4th, 2006 09:19 pmFrom an email to Lance, because I'm too tired to re-type what happened tonight...
Wow...we had a very interesting evening here at Casa Jones. Severe storms started popping up like crazy all around central Ohio. Tornadoes and hail were rampant. Finally, it was our turn.
A funnel cloud was spotted over the golf course that backs up to this subdivision.
After what I saw, I'm convinced.
We had quarter sized hail, at the very smallest. It was blowing SIDEWAYS. Two hours later, it was still all over the front and backyard. Mom's car was parked outside (Grandma's car was in the garage). Fortunately, no damage to her car.
A giant branch from the tree in the backyard fell partially on the roof and mostly on the back deck. The eave was bent some. The porch swing had a hole ripped in it. Otherwise, everything was fine. Rob and I spent an hour afterwards cutting the branch into manageable chunks and hauling it away. Hey, at least he has fire wood for the winter.
The power went out briefly. This is probably around the time that the funnel cloud was spotted near the house. We grabbed the flashlight and headed into the bedroom in the basement.
I have never seen anything like this. IT SCARED THE SHIT OUT OF ME. Sideways blowing rain. The hail was just pouring down. I have never seen this much hail in my life. And it stopped. And then it started again several minutes later. The yard is still a mess, but at least the dogs can go out now. We were worried that we would have to delay our trip by a day and have someone come to remove the giant branch, but once we assessed the damage, we realized that we could do it ourselves.
I don't think the phone is working yet. Mom was using her cellphone to call people. I'm glad she has that now.
I'm sure you're sorry that you weren't here, as you would've been closer to a tornado than you ever were during your infamous tornado chasing spring break in college.
I have pics of the house after the storm. Once I get them downloaded, I'll send them.
