Things That Go Scratch in the Attic
Aug. 31st, 2007 08:09 amIt seems our friend Scratchy is still alive. We have yet to determine what kind of creature it is, since we have yet to catch a glimpse of it. Lance has been up to the attic several times, and hasn't seen any evidence of anything living there, but something must account for the scratching noises we are hearing coming from the attic. The creature's favorite perch appears to be on the spot directly above my desk in the office, and it scratches out its fury at me whenever I have the computer turned on (which is pretty much all day).
Just a few weeks ago, Lance set up mouse traps filled with peanut butter. There were already mouse traps set up there, but this creature has found a way to obtain the food within without getting caught in them. Surely, we thought peanut butter would be its undoing. That's not something you can easily remove from a trap.
Well, this thing - whatever it is - is smarter than us. It hasn't touched those traps.
I suspect that it's not a mouse or a rat at all, but a marder...one of those pesky weasel-like things that crawl up inside your car engine and destroy it. It would've had to climb our shrubs to get up to the roof, but then again, so would a mouse or a rat.
It could be a pigeon. But I'm sure Lance would've seen some evidence of that...feathers and things.
All I know is, I sure won't miss Scratchy once we leave this house. It's a bit creepy to have some mysterious, elusive animal living up in your attic.
ETA: Apropos of nothing, but why is someone standing out in the soaking wet street (it's raining pretty heavily at the moment), trying to blow grass clippings around with a leaf blower? IT'S WET, YOU MORON!
*shakes head*

Date: 2007-09-01 05:30 pm (UTC)Believe me, if I had one of these things living in my attic, I would be very excited. I'm not an avid birder (like, say, my brother, who has based his life's work on birds), but I do like checking birds off my life list.
