1. What did you do in 2007 that you'd never done before?
Took a cruise. Bought a house and a new car.
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I kept my one big resolution...to lose 26 pounds. I lost even more than that. I am not making resolutions for 2008 because I'm just too preoccupied with other things right now to give resolutions much thought.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
My brother's wife. We're not close since I only met her once at the wedding, but obviously my brother and I are close.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
My Grandma, in September.
5. What countries did you visit?
Geez, that's a long list: Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Italy, Austria, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Poland, Estonia, Russia...I think that covers it.
6. What would you like to have in 2008 that you lacked in 2007?
A full-time job.
7. What date from 2007 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
There are a few, but December 14 - the day we officially became homeowners.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Becoming a homeowner.
9. What was your biggest failure?
Not getting the success I had hoped for as a travel writer.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Major major case of the flu in January last year. There were few times in my life when I was ever so sick.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
Our house.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Lance's - because he made this big leap with me and stayed positive and encouraging throughout.
13. Whose behavior appalled and depressed you?
A certain leader of our country who has sickened me ever since he took office.
14. Where did most of your money go?
House. Car. Travel.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
See #14.
16. What songs will always remind you of 2007?
Songs don't really remind me of years. They remind me of moments. I can say that on my flight here from Amsterdam, I heard the song "Home" by Daughtry (from the airline's radio playlist), which struck me as being particularly poignant at the time.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. Happier or sadder?
Happier
ii. Thinner or fatter?
Thinner. Hell yes.
iii. Richer or poorer?
Oh God...much, much poorer. Buying a house and car will do that.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Writing. Traveling.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
All the medical appointments I had in the first few months of 2007? Yeah, fewer of those.
20. How did you spend Christmas?
Lazing around the house. Watching Lance almost blow himself up testing out the fireplace. Cooking Christmas dinner.
22. Did you fall in love in 2007?
With new places...I fell in love with just about everywhere we visited.
23. How many one-night stands?
Never in my life...ever!
24. What was your favorite TV program?
I don't think I had one. I'm not all that fond of television anymore. We spent at least half the year not even having TV reception.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Hate is a strong word. But thinking about it, I can't really think of anyone off the top of my head.
26. What was the best book you read?
Hmmmm. That's a tough one. There were so many good books. I can't pick just one.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
This is totally a joke...Mika! My God...his music was EVERYWHERE. I couldn't escape it. But honestly, I would have to say Sia. She's been around a few years, but I only just heard "Breathe Me" for the first time this year, and I played that song over and over and over. I couldn't get enough of it, and it really spoke to me. Perhaps that is a song that will always remind me of 2007.
28. What did you want and get?
A house. A NEW CAR for the first time in my life. A Kitchenaid mixer.
28. What did you want and not get?
A job...I'm getting closer, though!
30. What was your favorite film of this year?
I haven't really seen many. And I didn't particularly love the ones I've seen.
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Turned 32. Was sick in the morning, but rebounded late morning and invited a couple of friends out to lunch last minute. We had chinese food. Lance took me to dinner in the evening at Brasserie Murphy. Very quiet day.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Actually accomplishing all the writing goals I had set for myself.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2007?
A mix of European style and American style. It works well here in Seattle.
34. What kept you sane?
Books. Reading is how I find comfort. Always having my Mom be a phone call away. Good friends.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
I don't really have one.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Anything regarding the military and Iraq. Also, the mixing of politics with religion.
37. Whom did you miss?
My family, because they are so far away...and now, my friends back in Germany.
38. Who was the best new person you met?
OMG...I can't think of anybody...how horrible is that? I met a lot of people in 2007, but none of them really stayed in my life. My friends go back further than that.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2007:
2007 was all about life lessons. We went through a major overseas move. We bought a house for the very first time. I am now really starting to understand the role I play in my marriage...how much Lance depends on me, too. There were a lot of times in Germany where I felt I was just dragging him down, due to being unable to contribute to our finances, but those were MY hang-ups, not his. I'm starting to see myself now in the way that he sees me. And honestly, it's rather terrifying right now, because I know how much this house and the car depends upon my getting a job. But I also have the vision for how to make this house OURS (if Lance had it his way, he would leave everything the way it was when we moved in), and I am the one who has gotten the redecorating project moving forward. Even though many things have gone wrong, I now know how to strip wallpaper and paint.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
Just one? I don't think that's possible with all the changes we've had this year. There isn't one song that could sum up the entire year.
Took a cruise. Bought a house and a new car.
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
