prosodicIf this were an ideal world, we would've already had neighbors stop by to introduce themselves and say hello.
But this is not an ideal world, and we found it strange how many of our neighbors would actually just stand out in front of our house and gawk at us, without so much as a friendly smile or a wave.
Lance has smiled and waved at the elderly lady who lives kitty-corner from us. She usually smiles and waves back. But neither of us have talked to her yet. I said hi to a neighbor girl who was playing out in the street in front of our house, and she said hi back. But until today, that was the only contact we've had with anyone on our street (with the exception of Al, the realtor who sold this house, who lives about 4 houses down).
A couple days before Christmas, a visitor of our across the street neighbors rang our doorbell to tell us that his car got stolen in their driveway, and for us to be on the lookout for anything suspicious. But still, he was a visitor (from Vancouver) and not our actual neighbor.
Today...finally...I hear the doorbell ring, and I answer it to find a woman who lives 2 doors down. She said she wanted to come over and say hello anyway, but she had a perfect excuse to do so - she found a stray cat and wanted to know if it was ours. So I let her in and we chatted for maybe half an hour.
She told me that car theft is really huge in this neighborhood. The previous residents of our house had their car stolen twice. She had her car stolen once. I should warn Lance. While my new car (name hasn't been determined yet) will have a place in the garage, he has to keep his truck parked outside. He has a security system on his truck, just as my car comes with one, but these days, those aren't enough. But we didn't pay all that extra money for the window etchings and the LoJack for my car...we just simply couldn't afford it.
She also said that the park, which is right next door to her, attracts suspicious looking men who like to park and hang out around there in the summer. So far, they haven't committed any crimes that she is aware of, but she suspects that they deal drugs. I asked her if there is a neighborhood watch, and she said there isn't, but we should start one. I suggested perhaps we call the Kent Police and ask them how to go about doing that.
Anyway, she seemed really nice and I wish I had been more prepared...I would've asked her to stay for tea or something. But I was slicing up an apple when she came, and as it was, it was all brown by the time I actually got around to eating it. Besides, our house is still a disaster, and it's embarrassing.
