Reece and I met up with Farlis and her dog for a long walk this afternoon.

Today could not have been more gorgeous. As we were making our way back toward our cars, we had an absolutely stunning view of Mt. Rainier. I had to take a picture.

Dog is tired...I'm tired. I wore my pedometer today...as a test run. The Live Well, Eat Well challenge that we're doing at work doesn't start until tomorrow.

I was well over 12,000 steps when I took it off. My goal is to have at least 10,000 steps a day. But I'm not exactly sure how I'll accomplish that goal because I don't have the time to take an almost 2 hour walk everyday.

Anyway, my plan of attack for the challenge:

- park all the way in the back of the parking lot so I have to walk further to the building
- take the stairs instead of the elevator (I do this anyway)
- walk for half an hour on my lunch break (I do this a few times a week anyway)
- take Reece for walks as much as possible

Still working on how I'm going to manage 5 cups of fruit/veg a day. I'm a carboholic, so it'll be difficult for me to eat more veggies, particularly since the vast majority of them irritate my stomach. And I don't like the prepwork involved with most fruit, but I should suck it up and do it anyway.

Good luck with the challenge! I had to do something similar for my nutrition project for school and it was fun. And the 5 servings (at least we did servings, not cups) of fruits and veggies weren't all that difficult, really. I had more problems with getting enough veggies because I like fruits better and they differentiated between them.

Fruits: what ones are you avoiding b/c of prep work? There are several you can eat that really have little to no prep involved. Bananas--not even any washing involved; peel and eat. Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and grapes just need to be washed first. Apples and pears: I hate eating these as whole pieces, so I always slice. Buy an apple corer ($5 or so at the grocery store) and use it on both apples and pears--you get easy-to-eat slices with virtually no effort.

Something else you could try is smoothies...for those you could use frozen fruit, which would save you even from having to wash it first.

I have a mild banana allergy. I can eat them baked in things, but I can't eat them raw or they make me sick to my stomach.

I already eat berries. I usually have then in my yogurt parfait at breakfast.

Since I spent the vast chunk of my waking hours at work, I just didn't want to drag apples, pears and a corer (I have one) to work everyday. Once I finish walking on my lunch break, I have very little time to eat my lunch, so it's easier to bring things that don't involve prep.

Core them at home and put them in a ziploc bag or tupperware? I never carry a corer with me, either, but I take sliced pears and apples with me a lot for snacks for Lyle while we're out. But I usually have a bag with me, anyway, so it's not extra for me to carry.

I also buy melons and cut them up (all at once, so yes, there's prep, but I get it out of the way in 10 minutes one time) and store them in tupperware. They'll last a while that way...at least a week. (I usually finish them by the end of a week, so I don't know how much past a week they'd go.)

Alternately, if you really don't want ANY prepwork at all, you could just by the pre-cut fruit from the store. I sometimes do that to get a variety of fruits when I don't want, like, an entire pineapple plus an entire box of strawberries, etc. It costs more but sometimes the convenience is worth it.
