My favorite Updike novels were The Centaur and Roger's Version--for me, he was kind of a coming of age. I related to his stunted rural, blue-collar Pennsylvanian Bildungsromans and his protagonists' crises of faith as if he'd been writing about my adolescence. And then, when i got to his stories about upwardly mobile, middle-class suburbanites and all their petty intrigues and affairs and machinations, I swore that the life I led would never bear the faintest resemblance to the ones he portrayed. Bless him, he saved me, if indirectly.
