Ms. Truss: England, and the English language, need you now more than ever.

Why so much debate over an apostrophe? And why would somebody need a high school diploma to understand its use? It's quite simple, really. I can hardly fathom why these people cannot grasp the concept, and must therefore dumb down the English language.

As an ESL student I can tell you that the correct use of an apostrophe is not the most difficult aspect of the English language. Of course I sometimes mess up but that's not because I don't know how to use them but because I don't proofread thoroughly enough.

This reminds me of the so-called German "spelling reform" which in some cases just declared common mistakes the correct way to spell something. Now it seems like most people just use a mix of both sets of rules.
