10 days...
Jun. 21st, 2009 04:01 pmTen more days until we're in Ohio. I'm getting so excited. I just miss my family so much. It's been really difficult for me these past 6 years or so, because I've always been so close to them, and then living in Europe only allowed me to see them once a year. And living here hasn't really been any better. I don't think I've been able to see my family more often just because we all now live on the same land mass. Living in Washington feels just as far away as living in Germany did, for all I get to see them.
But we're getting close now. I talked to Mom & Rob earlier and they wanted to know what beverages/food/etc. we require while we're there. I'm not picky. I forgot to mention, though, that I was hoping we could do a belated celebration for Lance's birthday. His is Monday the 29th and we leave for Ohio on the 1st, so I was hoping we could have cake or something on the 2nd, which is our first full day there (we arrive too late on the 1st to do anything).
And it feels like a proper summer there too, which is great. Because we've now had the heat on for the 2nd morning in a row. And it seems wrong to me that we should have the heat on today especially, as this is the first day of summer. We did just have a storm blow through here...with thunder! Sadly, no lightning, and it didn't last long.
We got our grocery shopping done today. Just need enough to get by for the next 10 days and then for a few days after we get back, although it would be helpful if we have no perishables in the fridge by the time we leave. We got Reece a 5 lb. bag of dog food to give to Petsmart when we board her. I hope it's enough for a week, because under her normal eating patterns, it wouldn't be, but I suspect she won't eat normally while we're gone. She's so clingy that if even one of us leaves, it completely throws her off her normal habits. But they also have Science Diet to feed the dogs if they don't have their own food, so I suppose they can supplement if they have to, or we'll just bring along an extra container of food in addition to the 5 lbs. we're already bringing.
Lance got this absolutely brilliant idea for a book today - a travel guide, in fact, for an untapped market. I just checked to make sure it was an untapped market. It's something that we would have to work on together...as far as he would be assisting me with the research and I would do the bulk of the writing (although with him doing some, since it requires a bit of technical expertise as well). He wanted to come up with a way that we could combine two of our passions and our future goals. And it makes total sense. I'm way too excited. This won't take place until a few years down the road yet, because Lance will have to be retired from the Air Force first, or at least have more time on his schedule for traveling. But hopefully this shall remain an untapped market for the time being. And that's all I'm going to say about it for now. There are many ways we could bring this project into fruition: as a printed text, an e-book, a series of newsletters...or any combination of the above. And he wants a coordinating blog to go with it.
I was just utterly gobsmacked listening to it all, because it means he's fully embracing my having a future in writing. I know he was worried about the money aspect of it, even though I told him that I am just starting this over again after an almost 2 year hiatus...it's going to take time, especially in this economy, with a freelance market that is particularly flooded right now. But I've done my research. I know I'm taking the right steps, even if I am taking more time than some people (I am methodical in many ways), and I know things aren't going to happen overnight. He's coming around, and that's so important to me.
Anyway, I just noticed the time, and should probably take a look at dinner. We had the option of chicken or grilling burgers, but given the downpour we just had, I don't think Lance wants to bother with the grill. So I'll just do some chicken, I think.
