Nov. 27th, 2008 12:10 pmLance has a cold, so unfortunately, he cannot smell all the amazing aromas going on in this house right now. The turkey breasts are really starting to smell nice. I brushed olive oil on the skins, and they're getting crisp and brown. When they're getting too brown, I'll have to cover them with foil.
They are seasoned with Mrs. Dash. That's all. Keep it simple, stupid. Though I have to admit, when I was preparing the turkey breasts, I wished I had something to slip underneath their skins - garlic cloves, lemon slices...SOMETHING.
We'll have a lot left over. I think the 6 lb. breast was a good size for all of us, but we'll probably obliterate that one and then Lance and I will have the smaller one for leftovers.
Minor crisis today - my meat thermometer might not work. Lance offered to run out and get a new battery, but I didn't see the point.
Reece can smell the meat roasting and is going just a little bit insane. But I have a special Thanksgiving treat for her. She's getting a whole can of Nutro Healthy Desserts - pumpkin crumble flavor. She would probably rather have turkey, but she's just not getting any. It's funny, because just a short while ago, I flung a Wheat Thin on the floor (accidentally) right in front of her, and she didn't even try to eat it.
Anyway, I called my family. Everyone's well. Dad is alone this Thanksgiving. That was unplanned. And I think normally, he would try to forget that it was a holiday and just kind of keep to himself. But he went out last night and bought a turkey breast roast and some side dishes, and he's cooking a Thanksgiving meal for himself. I'm proud of him. My mom's side of the family is well - utter chaos at Grandma's house as usual. They passed the phone around, so I got to talk to my cousin Jason from S. Carolina, Lori & Lindsey, who came from Illinois, and Aunt Sue, Mom & Rob and Grandma. I miss them.
I talked to my brother in Guam last night, when it was Thanksgiving for them. There is a chance that they'll be moving here after the assignment in Guam is over in a year. He is requesting Bremerton. I'm thrilled...and I'll keep my fingers crossed. I would love to have my niece and the one on the way living near us. But I also know that when it comes to the military, you should never get your hopes up too high. They are guaranteed somewhere on the west coast, at least.

Nov. 27th, 2008 06:41 pmNothing makes one feel quite as satisfied as successfully hosting a first Thanksgiving dinner. It is something I have looked forward to for years, especially significant since this is the first Thanksgiving in our house.
The turkey breasts were perfection. One was more than enough for all of us. I packed up the leftovers from that one to send home with Rich and Kathy, and Lance and I will eat the smaller turkey breast, which I just finished shredding apart with my fingers.
Got a lot of compliments on the mashed potatoes. They really were fantastic. Who knew that such a simple recipe could have such amazing results. This will now be my official Thanksgiving mashed potato recipe.
We have tons of leftovers. We sent leftovers of almost everything home with our guests. I ran out of containers before I could get to the green bean casserole or the sweet potato casserole.
I have to say, I was not terribly fond of Shari's pumpkin pie. It was good. But it seemed under-baked to me. The pie filling was too soft. The crust looked barely done and crumbled apart easily under the slightest pressure from the knife as I was slicing it. I won't be getting their pumpkin pie again.
Anyway, I'm winding down. Have to work tomorrow. I'm enjoying a hard-earned glass of White Zin. Then I'll shower and probably be off to bed. I'm really tired.
I'm just so happy with how everything turned out. And Reece was pretty well behaved. All in all, it was a really nice day.
