Hello Jetlag!
Jun. 29th, 2007 02:56 amHAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY SWEET HUSBAND!!! I feel bad that I can't be there today to celebrate with him, but he doesn't think it's any big deal.

Anyway...so I'm here in Ohio. Yesterday was very long, although both flights were good. The only problem on the Frankfurt - Detroit leg is that the entertainment system kept shutting down. But I somehow managed to watch 2 movies: Garden State and Romeo + Juliet (the Leonardo DiCaprio version).
The guy I sat next to on the plane was nice...Army veteran who lived in Germany. We talked some. But I had an aisle seat and could never get completely comfortable because he wanted to get up and stretch his legs a lot (he was tall). I suppose I should've asked him to switch seats with me, but my right knee was getting really painful from not having room to stretch out my own legs, so I had to stretch them out in the aisle from time to time.
My flight to Columbus was delayed when I got to Detroit. Mom says that I'm lucky it wasn't cancelled altogether, since Northwest has been cancelling a lot of flights. But they were delayed by half an hour, which was no big deal really. They were begging people to volunteer for a later flight and take a travel voucher, which I almost did, but by the time I got a hold of my mom, they were okay and didn't need any more people to take the later flight.
So I spent more time in Detroit than I anticipated, since we arrived about 45 minutes earlier than scheduled and then my 2nd flight was delayed. And that was okay, because I managed (as I always do) to get in the slowest line in passport control, and then when I had to find my baggage to go re-check it, I could not find it. I walked all through that baggage claim area 5 times and looked at every red suitcase, and could not find it. I was on the verge of total panic. But I managed to find an employee who took me immediately to an area where another employee had off-loaded several bags and that is where my suitcase was. Crisis averted. I had found a suitcase exactly like mine on the same claim that my bag was supposed to be on, so I had feared the worse - that someone had taken mine, thinking it was theirs.
Anyway, so I'm here now. And when I arrived in Columbus, Mom wasn't there. She was stuck in traffic, still trying to get to the airport. I got my suitcase and dug out 50 cents and called home and Rob told me to hang tight. And no sooner had I gotten off the phone with him than I saw her wandering around baggage claim, looking around.
So...I was hit with several bits of news at once:
- Grandma fell the other day and broke several ribs. She had a fight with her vacuum cleaner, and the vacuum cleaner won. She's fine...just uncomfortable, and she's still getting around okay. (This is obviously not the same grandma who fell a couple of weeks ago and broke her hip...and she, too, is fine. But I don't know if she's getting around okay.) (Another thought - I inherited these genes. Oi.)
- None of my cousins are coming to the family reunion.
And then, shortly after I got home, my aunt called and said that the family reunion was being cancelled altogether, which was the main reason for my visit. But there are some relatives already in town, so we're going to get together for a picnic on Sunday, which I suppose is still a family reunion.
Mom is off work today, so we're going up to Findlay. We are not going to Picnic with the Pops tomorrow night. We talked about it and decided that we should just stay in Findlay for a few days and help Grandma. So Rob is taking the pops tickets to work today and I told him to try and at least get half my money back on them, but if he can't get rid of them for $10 each, to just give them away so that at least someone gets use out of them. But he's insisting on reimbursing me for the tickets.
