Seven Things About Me (and then some)

A. List seven habits/quirks/facts about yourself.
B. Tag seven people to do the same.
C. Do not tag the person who tagged you or say that you tag "whoever wants to do it."
1. I always judge a book by its cover. Horrible, I know. But if the cover of the book is boring or ugly, I am less likely to pick it up. (Just to clarify, this is not a metaphor for people...I really am talking about books and only books.)
2. I eat my cantaloupe with a sprinkling of pepper. It seemed weird when I was a kid, but considering the trend to wrap prosciutto around melon, it doesn't seem that weird now (I got that habit from my dad).
3. My drink of choice with buttered popcorn is orange juice. This always grosses people out, but I love the combination of salty/buttery and citrus. I actually talked a relative into trying this once, and she agreed it was good.
4. I have an unhealthy obsession with spiders. I'm always scanning the corners and around the perimeters of the inside of the house, looking for spiders that might be lurking around…or cobwebs. I'm constantly fighting off spiders that are encroaching on the areas around the windows and doors on the outside of the house.
5. I can't eat anything that looks up at me from the plate. Fish must be filleted. Shrimp must not have heads. They had roast suckling pig on the cruise, and it literally was an entire pig sitting on the carving board. It nauseated me to look at it.
6. I can't eat food that squirts when I bite into it. Corn on the cob is the primary example of this. I hate getting my face messy when I eat (or ever…come to think of it).
7. Clutter and excess make me uncomfortable. At least twice a year, I go through my closet and toss out anything that doesn't fit or that's damaged (which is why I had to get a brand new wardrobe after I lost weight…I had gotten rid of my "skinny" clothes. Now I'm getting rid of my "fat" clothes). I often get rid of other things too…paring down makes me feel better. The only exception to this is books…if I don't have several unread books on hand at all times, I'm not happy. I constantly need to have things to read, and I'm happiest when I have a lot of books around me.
Okay...I guess I tag:
navygreen,
queendisko,
thespis_mellie,
katzies,
knightchik,
godchick and
heartsinarmor...unless those of you I tagged have already done it.
8. I have an obsession with antibacterial hand gel. I take it with me everywhere and sometimes use it several times a day (particularly before eating). I also wash my hands several times a day. Despite evidence that hand sanitizer does more harm than good in terms of preventing illness (as has been pointed out to me in comments, but I have already read the studies on that), I feel it's better than having unclean hands.
9. I have collected a lot of scarves in the past 2.5 years. I never liked scarves. Then I bought a pashmina in Istanbul, and suddenly, I couldn't get enough of them. I have several pashminas (which I wear as scarves) and a couple of scarves. I can coordinate a pashmina/scarf to go with every outfit. I was tempted to buy another one in Russia, but I managed to stop myself. :)
10. I wanted to be a Marine Biologist growing up. I had a fascination with whales in particular. It wasn't until 6th grade, when my English teacher discovered my aptitude for writing, that I started entertaining other possibilities about what to do with my life. From that point on, I was going to be a writer. So in college, I went from being a Journalism major to a Creative Writing major, and then switched to English Literature one semester after one of my writing instructors told me that I should consider something else. She apparently didn't find me all that talented. But English Literature is where I stayed, and it took a long time to build up confidence in my writing again.
11. My big dream since I was a little girl (and still to this day) is to be a professional dancer or gymnast (although my interest in gymnastics has waned considerably since childhood and my days of worshipping Mary Lou Retton). Usually, ballet was my main passion (I've always had a raging crush on Baryshnikov), but the type of dance sometimes varied...it switched to Irish Dancing once I discovered the wonder that is Riverdance and then Lord of the Dance (and I believe I mentioned before that I've been to several LOTD shows and had the opportunity to meet the dancers on several occasions and hang out with them). I *almost* took gymnastics classes when I was young, but I felt guilty about how expensive they were and about the commitment on the part of my mother, who would have to constantly drive me to lessons (even when I was young, I was aware of finances). I was on the dance team in high school without any formal training. As an adult, I took ballet and tap classes as electives at Ohio State. Ballet was very very hard, but I loved every minute of it. Tap was okay. Now I just remain an admirer, although I still get a little pain in my heart every time I go to a performance.
12. I had my first job when I was 10. I delivered papers...something I continued doing through high school and even occasionally after I started college (my dad worked for the newspaper as a district manager, and sometimes needed me to fill in for paper carriers who were sick or on vacation).

Date: 2007-09-02 11:16 am (UTC)Another reason why antibacterial hand lotion is not good is that it wipes out all of the natural bacteria that exists on your body, i.e. "the good guys." Those good guys help you in defending yourself against the "bad guys" that can cause you illness by out-competing them for resources (food, etc.) as well as by not giving them any room to attach to you. If you wipe the good guys out by using antibacterial lotion, the bad guys have an easier time attaching and growing bigger on you... which can lead to illness.
Honsestly, habitually using antibacterial hand lotion is one of the worst things you can do to protect yourself from illness... it should be used sparingly and only when soap and water are not readily available! :)
Anyway, sorry again for the intrusion... thanks for letting me peak and speak! :)

Date: 2007-09-02 11:27 am (UTC)I know I'm not doing myself any favors, and it also makes me wonder why doctor's offices rely on it so much, rather than handwashing. I see it everywhere now.
I'm probably more dirt-phobic than I am germ-phobic. If I'm unable to wash my hands, I figure the hand sanitizer is the next best thing (I probably exaggerated how much I use it...but I am a habitual hand washer. The hand sanitizer gets used when I'm out of the house and about to get in contact with food).
By the way, "saoirse" used to be my internet handle...a long long time ago. ;)
