Travel Updates
Sep. 22nd, 2007 08:19 pmLonger posts are forthcoming on my travel blog.
For now:
Yesterday - Innsbruck.
It's an AMAZING city. We visited the palace and then just walked around...did some shopping. We stopped in St. Jakob's, which is a gorgeous cathedral. As we left town, the tour guide took us up to the ski jump so we could have fantastic views of the city.
Today - South Tyrol (Italy)
We drove through Austria, taking the Europa Bridge (the highest bridge in Europe), which had the most breathtaking scenery I have ever seen. We stopped at a roadside rest along the way, and the views from McDonald's were pretty enough to make you cry.
We made our way down to South Tyrol, which once belonged to Austria and became part of Italy in the 1940's. This area is often overlooked by tourists, which is a shame. It offers the best of both Austrian and Italian culture. They speak German and Italian there...the restaurants serve Italian and Austrian cuisine.
First stop - Vipiteno. We stayed there a couple of hours. We did a short wine tasting and then walked around town, doing a bit of shopping (I found the perfect purse for taking on travels...of course, now that we're leaving in 3 months. I still bought it). We followed this with a visit to a 12th century castle. Then we had lunch at an Austrian-style Gasthof that served mostly Italian food.
Then we made our way to Brixen, which is a famous religious pilgrimage site. We were lucky...a festival was going on in the town square. We only had a little over an hour there. But we went to the magnificent cathedral which is one of the most amazing ones I've seen yet. The courtyard was covered in medieval frescoes...absolutely amazing.
We wandered the streets a bit, stopped to buy postcards and get gelato, and then we had to leave.
Brixen was my favorite. I wish we had had more time there.
Tomorrow - Oktoberfest. And I really don't care much about that. I hope to get off on my own to explore Munich.
