Guest Bath - just some notes and links
Feb. 16th, 2008 10:38 pmIs it weird that I am ridiculously excited about the cute shower curtain I just bought?
But honestly, the guest bath doesn't have a touch of Karyn and Lance in it. Other than our towels (which don't even match the bathroom), the pink bath rug that I bought (because the countertops are pink tile, and ARRRRRGH!) and a couple little decorative things I put in there, everything else is unchanged. The shower curtain in there now is from the previous residents. It's old and dingy. In every way, this bathroom has the appearance of Grandma's house. The pink wallpaper border with the ducks (do you sense a fowl theme - roosters in the kitchen, ducks in the bathroom)...the cream wallpaper with pink floral print...BAH!!! Must tone down all the pink!
I plan to tear down the wallpaper in this room while Lance is in training in Oklahoma City. He'll be gone for a couple of months, and household projects will keep me busy. The bathroom is small and won't be a big deal to paint.
The only problem is the light fixture. I want to replace it. But I don't want to electrocute myself. Lance has done lighting before. He knows what to do. Perhaps we should replace the lighting before he leaves. I already picked out a nice fixture at Lowe's this evening (yes, we started an affair with Lowe's. We still love you, Home Depot!). This is similar to what we have now. I think it's pretty dated. This is what I want to replace it with...or something similar.
Anyway, my entire plan for the bathroom was going to depend on what shower curtain I ended up getting. I was going to use that as my focal point and work around it. But of course, the shower curtain had to complement the pink counter.
So...khaki shower curtain with pink and green paisley/floral print (on clearance at JCPenney.com...YAY!).
Now, I'm thinking light tan or cream walls. The linoleum is going to be replaced eventually...maybe something like this. The giant vanity mirror is going to be taken down and repurposed...and I'll get a smaller, more tasteful mirror to put up.
I would like to rip out and replace the sink, since the sink is already scratched up, which the previous owners tried to cover up with appliance touch-up. It's basically like white-out. But it's so obvious looking. I would also eventually like to rip out and replace the tub. The tub we have now is horrible...cannot take bubble baths in it comfortably. But these are probably going to end up being optional projects, unfortunately. If I had to choose between the two, I would do the sink.
Since the cabinet doors are exactly the same throughout the house, I'm trying to think of ways to change them up in each room. Since there are only 2 cabinet doors in this bath, I may just replace them altogether and then add drawer pulls to the drawers.
Anyway, I can see all this coming together in my head, and I think I'm going to make it look so much better than it does right now. It's just too pink and grandmotherly right now. I also need to update fixtures like towel racks and the toilet paper holder. Just these little things would improve the look tremendously, both in this bathroom and the master bath (don't even get me started...in my search for a shower curtain, I found one that looked exactly like the wallpaper in our master bath. Crazy. Yikes!)
As for the repurposed mirror...
I want to hang that over the fireplace and put a frame around it. I plan to paint some kind of botanical design on it. Granted, I'm not artsy...I didn't inherit my family's visual art genes (don't ask me where the writing genes come from...there are no writers in my family)...but I might be able to do something simple freehanded or use stencils.
I have so many ideas...I just need to start journaling them. In an actual paper journal so I can make sketches and lists...not here on LJ.
