Shopping...
Mar. 24th, 2008 04:17 pmI really hate shopping. It takes me a long time to find anything that fits, and I would just rather be doing other things.
But because I have to wear "relaxed business" attire to work, I needed to get things that fit that category. I only have one pair of dress pants right now, and they are a bit too large on me, and clearly made for an amazon with 8 foot long legs (those pants will now go into the Goodwill clothing bin).
Last night I got started on the shopping by ordering a few things from JCPenney's online outlet. Just tops. I don't order pants online because they almost never fit and I don't want to pay to send them back or drive clear out to JCP, which is kind of a hike from here.
Anyway, today I drove into Covington to Kohl's, because I remembered them having a very good selection of career clothing. What I didn't realize is that most of the pants were the same brand - Apt. 9 - which fit me, but are very snug on my butt. And that's not very professional, is it?
So I ended up just getting a blouse there and a purse. The purse I carry around now is very good for casual outfits, not so much for professional outfits. And the little tiny purse I bought to take to job interviews is, well, tiny, for one thing, and it's got a huge rip inside for another. That is also going into the Goodwill bin.
On a whim, I stopped at Fred Meyer across the street. I never give Fred Meyer much thought because I think of it mostly as a grocery store, but they are like a Super Walmart (only much MUCH more expensive). I didn't expect to find anything, but I walked away with two pairs of Dockers for around $60. I got a basic black pair and a gray one with stripes (which was supposed to be $36 on sale, but scanned $23...I'm not complaining!). I was very well pleased...they look very nice and are not too snug anywhere.
After that, I headed to Target, since I had a prescription to pick up anyway (HAHA! As if they actually had any record of it!), and I got a pair of khakis there, a cute pair of shoes, and a blouse, which I'm going to end up taking back because I didn't bother to try it on until I got home and it's way too long.
So I should be all set for my first week at work anyway. And I'll just have to buy more clothes as I start getting paychecks.
We are allowed to wear dressy capri pants, as long as there are no outside pockets on them. So provided I can find some that actually look halfway decent on me, I may be getting some of those later on. Otherwise, I might have to get used to wearing skirts or dresses. But it might not even get hot enough here in the summer for me to really worry about it. And I'm sure the office is air-conditioned besides, which means I'll have to bundle up indoors anyway.

Date: 2008-03-24 11:46 pm (UTC)One place you may not think to check is Dressbarn, but they do actually have some nice looking items that aren't grandma. Cato's good as well, especially if you can find an outlet.
There's an Ann Taylor coupon on top of a sale today, I think... slickdeals.net is awesome for finding that kind of thing.
