Since it doesn't look like a graduate degree is economically feasible anytime in our near future, I may compromise and look at a certificate program.

Both UW and Bellevue Community College offer certificate programs either in professional editing or technical writing/editing or some combination thereof. It's about $2000 through BCC for their certificate program, which is about 9 months long. I'm pretty sure Lance's education benefits will assist me with paying for this.

And after reading through some writing/editing listservs, it appears that a certification program like this would actually be quite useful.

All Lance needs to do is research what assistance, if any, I can get for this.

In other news, we may be going to the Tacoma Home & Garden Show in a couple of weeks. We're full of plans but need ideas. And I think it will be fun to go.

Did our grocery shopping today. Spent more than usual, but I got a huge rump roast that I'm going to make into Italian beef sandwiches, with the intention of freezing the leftovers. I want a well-stocked freezer again. And yeah, we might've paid more than usual for our groceries this time, but it should be cheaper later on because I'll already have meals in the freezer.

It was cold and foggy through this morning and early afternoon. Around 3 or so, the fog cleared and the sun was bright and blinding and it warmed up just enough to where it wasn't uncomfortable for me to take Reece on a walk. Also got some housecleaning done today too.

Now it's just time to hang out and relax.

I don't think you can get any assistance for graduate programs as a military spouse, but it will get you in-state status if you haven't lived there long enough.. though I suppose since you've been in WA for a year, it wouldn't help much.

Good luck, though!

This is just a certificate anyway, so I don't see any reason why tuition assistance couldn't be applied, since it's not for graduate-level work. They pay for teaching certification.

As far as in-state tuition, I became a Washington resident officially the day we bought property here, according to state law. No worries about that.

I don't think the military offers dependent assistance just yet, though there may be other programs I'm not aware of. From the GI Bill website:

Who’s eligible for Dependents’ Educational Assistance (Chapter 35) benefits and what can they be used for?
Answer

The Dependents’ Educational Assistance program provides education benefits for the spouse and dependent children of a veteran or service member who:

· Is determined to be permanently and totally disabled from service connected causes, or

· Is on active duty and is likely to be discharged with a permanent and total disability, or

· Died in service, or

· Died of service connected causes, or

· Is currently missing in action or captured in the line of duty.

This benefit may be used for pursuit of an undergraduate or graduate degree, courses leading to a certificate or diploma from business, technical or vocational schools, apprenticeship, and on-the-job training programs. Benefits for correspondence courses are available to spouses only. The program provides up to 45 months of education or training.

Aha. Try this link. There's some branch-specific information on dependent assistance. :)

Ok. Because when we were in Germany, there was STAP (Spouse Tuition Assistance Program) and I had some friends who used it to attend graduate school at University of Maryland's overseas program. Not sure if that only applied in Europe or if it applies here too.

STAP is definitely branch-specific to the Air Force (hence, why I'd never heard of it. :) ), but from the looks of it, it may be for overseas only. Check out sections A and B on that link I just gave you. I can't tell by the way it's written if it's for overseas, on-base classes only, or only if you have to qualify by going overseas. It's also not clear as to whether it's for-credit only or not. It certainly doesn't hurt to ask. :)

Also, while I'm thinking about it - it's the right time of year to apply for a Pell Grant, too. You could do that as soon as your taxes are done.

Maybe the "new" GI Bill in August would pay for it?

It looks like there is at least one program that would cover this entirely. I think it would qualify as a portable, in-demand career.
